The instant of change – Restrospective 29.10.2025
Five years of research on matter, between art and design
From October 23rd, in Milan, at Via Molino delle Armi 14, Mo.1950 presents a retrospective exhibition tracing five years of shared research at the intersection of art, design, and material experimentation. Just a few months after The Sound of Matter, a project that explored the sonic dimension through Marta Oliva’s mixtapes and Gabriele Zagaglia’s illustrations—the Milanese showroom now hosts The Instant of Change – Retrospective.
The exhibition brings together experiences, works, and reflections developed within the format conceived and curated by Luca Attilio Caizzi, in collaboration with Caesar
Ceramiche, QuadroDesign, and Rexa. Over the years, this project has evolved into an authentic editorial dimension of design research. A printed catalog has accompanied each edition, documenting and expanding upon its central themes; these publications will be displayed for the first time in the exhibition.
Since 2021, The Instant of Change has transformed the Milan Design Weeks into opportunities for dialogue and experimentation across ever-evolving creative languages. Each edition has contributed a distinct chapter to an ongoing investigation: an exploration of the transformations of matter and the narrative potential of contemporary design. Photography, installation, and experimentation have converged to form a visual discourse that spans diverse aesthetics and sensibilities—always in dialogue with the world of design.
This retrospective showcases a selection of works and interventions by the artists who have taken part in the project over the years: Alecio Ferrari, Alessandro Furchino Capria, Finemateria, and the collectives featured in the editions How Do Materials Taste (2024) and The Sound of Matter (2025). Through their perspectives, The Instant of Change – Retrospective reconstructs an atlas of experiences reflecting on the temporal dimension of transformation: the instant as process, the surface as metamorphosis, thought becoming form.
In Milan, within the space of Via Molino delle Armi, the exhibition design offers continuity and depth to the narratives of each artist, turning the Mo.1950 showroom into a place of sedimentation and critical reinterpretation. The exhibition becomes an opportunity to question the role of design itself: a temporary archive of contemporary practice, where installation and material research—driven by the partner brands—intersect and overlap.
Within this framework, even the material library inside Mo.1950 becomes part of the narrative: an archive of surfaces and finishes, but also a design device that evolves alongside the format, continually integrating new materials to foster an ongoing dialogue between art, industry, and architecture. Its layout, renewed for the occasion, merges seamlessly with the exhibition path— embodying the same trajectory of change that defines The Instant of Change.
The Instant of Change – Retrospective serves as a platform for exchange among designers, architects, and artists, enabling the reading of transformations in matter as indicators of broader cultural evolution.
