Three new ceramic expressions
Cattelan Italia opens a new chapter in its exploration of material language: an ongoing journey driven by innovation and the ability to reinterpret materials through design.
A pioneer in introducing ceramic as a surface for large-scale tables, Cattelan Italia now presents three new ceramic finishes: Taj Mahal, Giava and Darwin. Inspired by natural stone, the three new ceramic finishes reinterpret its timeless beauty through a contemporary lens, creating surfaces that interact seamlessly with architecture and interior design.
Despite its name recalling one of India’s most iconic monuments, Taj Mahal actually refers to a fine-grained natural Brazilian quartzite renowned worldwide for its refined and versatile beauty. Its surface is distinguished by a light yet warm champagne-coloured background enriched with amber veining.
A subtle network of lighter veining enhances the crystalline structure with the faceted appearance typical of natural quartzite, while the contrast between more pronounced veins, resembling fine cracks across the surface, and fluid golden streaks evokes the soft folds of fabric, creating a remarkable sense of movement and depth. Among its key characteristics are exceptional stain resistance and outstanding durability, qualities that make it particularly well suited to everyday living. The material can also be moulded, making it ideal for tables and consoles with bases in curved ceramic with a monolithic effect, where the material follows the contours of the design and enhances its sculptural character.
Giava expresses a more graphic and multifaceted aesthetic. Bright and uniform at first glance, a closer look reveals an intricate composition of mineral deposits and geometric fragments reminiscent of the cross-section of crystalline stone. Beige tones, warm brown nuances and diagonal markings run across the surface like flashes of light, creating a rich and dynamic texture. The result is a finish that evokes harmonious imaginary landscapes, transforming interiors into spaces of balance and tranquillity.
Darwin raws inspiration from Brazilian Ebano quartzite, reinterpreting its distinctive character through long, parallel veins that flow confidently across the surface. Shades ranging from café-au-lait to deep brown are enriched with ochre and burnt sienna accents, creating a naturally rhythmic pattern that suggests different images depending on the viewer’s perspective: the cross-section of a majestic tree, an aerial view of a canyon or a weathered rock surface. The result is a surface that conveys solidity, elegance and depth. Like Giava, Darwin features a silky, matte soft-touch finish that enhances its tactile richness with a contemporary feel.
Taj Mahal, Giava and Darwin reaffirm Cattelan Italia’s ongoing aesthetic and technological research, expanding its range of ceramic finishes with three new expressions of materiality. Available across the brand’s ceramic collection, including dining tables, coffee tables, desks, sideboards and consoles, these finishes offer new possibilities for defining spaces with character and personality.
