Catellani & Smith: Light in dialogue with materials and finishes 27.05.2026
Behind the lighting pieces by Catellani & Smith lies a journey shaped by intuition, research and artistic sensibility. Each lamp originates and evolves through continuous experimentation, hands-on testing and processes that demand time and expertise.
The selection of materials and finishes is equally guided by careful study and in-depth exploration: each element is analysed for the way it interacts with light and enhanced for the quality of its aesthetic and decorative effect. Surfaces, textures and lighting effects thus become an integral part of the lamp’s expressive language, creating evocative and immersive atmospheres.
Among the most distinctive hallmarks of the production by Catellani & Smith is the presence of golden finishes in most of its lighting objects, born from Enzo Catellani’s reflection on the colour of natural light within his creative language. Light is never merely functional; it is a living material. From research into the refraction of light emerge surfaces coated with extremely fine, almost impalpable gold-coloured leaf, capable of generating warm and enveloping atmospheres.
The gold-coloured leaf, precious and delicate, is handled with great care and applied entirely by hand by artisans in the workshops of Villa di Serio (Bergamo), where every process preserves the value of craftsmanship and Italian manufacturing expertise.
Lamps such as Lederam, Luna Piena, Stchu-Moon, Gold Moon, Bellatrix and Macchina della Luce embody this attention through unique surfaces that are never perfectly identical.
Alongside gold-coloured leaf, Catellani & Smith also employs silver- and copper-coloured leaf finishes, to meet a variety of aesthetic and design requirements.
The concept of refraction also recurs in the crafting of irregular surfaces, developed through a distinctive process that turns the surface itself into an instrument for shaping light, as exemplified by the large disc in the Bellatrix wall lamp and the inner surfaces of the Stchu-Moon collection. This artisanal technique fully expresses the poetic vision of Catellani & Smith, in which imperfection assumes both aesthetic and functional value. Light is not simply emitted, but it is shaped through materials. Every hand-worked surface retains an unrepeatable quality, making each lighting piece different from the next and transforming lighting into a deeply sensory experience.
